Cynthia Nixon 'Was a Little Devastated' by 'Sex and the City' Scene Reaction
"Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon (Miranda) is running for governor of New York, and she's not exactly campaigning on a bigger closets platform.
Nixon (aka Miranda Hobbes) was on "The Wendy Williams Show" on April 4, and Us Weekly shared a sneak peek from their talk.
Williams asked Nixon about an interview she had given years ago, sharing her disappointment with the London premiere audience's reaction to a memorable scene from "Sex and the City: The Movie."
During the 2010 film's screening, the audience applauded the scene where Mr. Big (Chris Noth) surprises Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) with her own huge custom closet.
At the time, Nixon told the New York Times she found that gleeful reaction "devastating" and "disheartening."
"Because I thought: 'Is this what these women in the audience think true love is? A man who has enough money to buy you a walk-in closet?"
Nixon explained more to Wendy Williams in her April 4 interview:
"I was a little devastated. It seemed to me that the show was so much about female empowerment and about women making their own choices and women standing up for what they wanted and supporting themselves. So, to me, to have this be a climax of the film, that your very wealthy husband built you a really nice closet for your clothes, I thought, 'Wow, that's not really what you love about the show, is it?' 'Cause that's not what we were making it for.'"
She did add after that, "We love the clothes! I'm not saying we don't love the clothes."
Listen, SATC was definitely about women making their own choices, and Carrie Bradshaw definitely close to love clothes and shoes. That didn't make her silly or shallow, it was just one aspect of her character. And it was a sign of how well Mr. Big knew Carrie that he knew a massive closet would be her Cinderella dream. It wouldn't do a darn thing for Miranda -- or a lot of us -- but it was kind of the perfect Carrie/Big scene.
As one fan wrote, "He didn't do it because he had the money, he did it because it made her happy." Same as many couples on those home improvement shows, just supersized and in New York City.
