Box Office: 'Curse of La Llorona' Tops Slowest Easter Weekend in Years
"The Curse of La Llorona" the latest horror movie in "The Conjuring" universe, drummed up $26.5 million to dominate the slowest Easter weekend in 14 years.
Total ticket sales were a combined $112 million, the lowest since 2005, according to Comscore. Why so slow? No one wanted to open a big movie ahead of Marvel’s "Avengers: Endgame," which is expected to smash records when it debuts on April 26. (Meanwhile, sales for "Captain Marvel" were significantly up as fans binged MCU movies ahead of "Endgame"'s release.)
Audiences gave "The Curse of La Llorona" a "B-" CinemaScore.
Last weekend’s champ "Shazam!" dropped to second place with $17 million in its third weekend. It’s now earned $121 million at the domestic market. Overseas, it crossed the $200 million mark for a worldwide total of $322.8 million.
The faith-based drama "Breakthrough" debuted in third place with $11 million over the weekend and $14 million during its first five days of release. It's Disney’s first Fox release since the $71 billion merger. Roxann Dawson directed the movie, which was produced by DeVon Franklin of "Miracles from Heaven" and "Heaven Is for Real."
"Breakthrough" stars Chrissy Metz of "This is Us" as a mother who refuses to give up hope after her son nearly dies from a fall through an icy lake. Audiences gave the film, which is based on a true story, an "A" CinemaScore.
Disneynature’s family-friendly documentary "Penguins," narrated by Ed Helms, debuted below expectations with $2.3 million from 1,815 screens over the weekend. It's earned $3.3 million since it opened on April 17. It received an "A" CinemaScore from audiences.
In limited release, "Under the Silver Lake," starring Andrew Garfield, debuted in two locations, with $40,157 for a per-screen-average of $20,079. The quirky neo-noir is the third film from "It Follows" director David Robert Mitchell.
