Ben Affleck doesn't want any more of Harvey Weinstein's money.

The actor announced in a Fox 5 DC interview that he will donate any further residuals from his movies funded by The Weinstein Company and Miramax films. He plans to redirect the money to a nonprofit and named two contenders. Under consideration are Film Independent, which champions independent filmmakers, and the anti-sexual assault organization RAINN.

"I just didn't want to cash any more checks from the guy, you know?" Affleck said, according to Variety. "Some people probably couldn't afford to give all their residuals away, but even if you do 10 percent, that's something."

As the actor explained, the idea came from his fellow actor Kevin Smith, who committed to donating his residuals. Smith tweeted on Oct. 9 that he was "ashamed" to have been profiting while "others were in terrible pain." Since the scandal broke in early October, numerous women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Weinstein dating back decades. (Weinstein apologized for some of his behavior but has denied any allegations of non-consensual sex.)

Affleck became embroiled in the controversy after he spoke out against the producer, and Rose McGowan, one of Weinstein's accusers, alleged that Affleck knew about his behavior. Affleck's rep also took a hit shortly thereafter when critics called him out for allegedly groping Hilarie Burton in a 2003 "TRL" video. The actor quickly admitted that he "acted inappropriately" with Burton and apologized. He has not responded to other allegations of similar behavior that have since emerged, as Variety points out.

Affleck's pledge to donate his residuals may help rehab his image and ease his conscience. More than that, though, it will hopefully mark a true commitment to "looking at [his] own behavior" and "making sure [he's] part of the solution," as he told the Associated Press he intended to do.
