Ava DuVernay's Central Park Five Series Gets New Title, Release Date, Teaser
Ava DuVernay and Netflix's limited series about the Central Park Five has a new title," When They See Us," and a stunning teaser.
The four-part drama, which premieres May 31, is based on the notorious true story of the five teenagers of color, labeled the Central Park Five, who were convicted of a rape they did not commit. They spent years in prison before finally being exonerated.
The new title "embraces the humanity of the men and not their politicized moniker," DuVernay explained. The "Selma" director shared the first-look teaser on Twitter:
The teaser is breathtaking. The gorgeous cinematography comes from Bradford Young, who worked with DuVernay on "Selma" and also shot "Arrival."
Aside from the visuals, the miniseries is incredibly timely. It's been 30 years since the young men were falsely convicted of the crime. And the current president, Donald Trump, was a vocal proponent of the death penalty in the case at the time.
The sterling cast includes includes Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga, John Leguizamo, Felicity Huffman, Niecy Nash, and Blair Underwood.
