Anthony Mackie to Headline Netflix’s ‘Altered Carbon' Season 2
"Altered Carbon" will look quite a bit altered when it returns to Netflix for Season 2.
The streaming service renewed the freshman sci-fi drama for an eight-episode second season, which will see Season 1 star Joel Kinnaman replaced by "Avengers" actor Anthony Mackie as Takeshi Kovacs.
This actually makes sense because in the world of the show, human consciousness can be downloaded to a server and then uploaded into a new body (if you have the cash). So, forget dying of old age, disease, or even murder! All you need is a good wi-fi connection.
And much like "Doctor Who," this recasting was always in the cards. "Altered Carbon" is based on the science fiction novels by Richard K. Morgan, and in them, Takeshi lives through hundreds of years and inhabits many bodies. The series intends to explore themes of identity, mortality, and the human soul.
Whether Mackie continues beyond a season as Takeshi or the series finds a new body for his consciousness every year remains to be seen.
Kinnaman, meanwhile, can next be seen on Netflix's sixth and final season of "House of Cards."
