"Aladdin" has ridden its magic carpet to $1 billion at the global box office.

Disney's live-action remake of the 1992 animated hit opened in theaters Memorial Day weekend. Despite lukewarm reviews, it made $105 million in its opening weekend. On Thursday, the movie earned $343.1 million in North America and $656.2 million overseas for a global haul of $999.3 million.

This marks both star Will Smith and director Guy Ritchie's first billion-dollar movie (not adjusted for inflation).

The film starred Mena Massoud as the titular thief-with-a-heart-of-gold and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine. Smith took the iconic role of the Genie, made famous by Robin Williams in the original.
