Brad Pitt is seeing stars in the first trailer for "Ad Astra."

In highly-anticipated sci-fi thriller from James Gray ("The Lost City of Z"), Pitt plays an astronaut who witnesses a devastating space station accident. When Earth begins to suffer from a mysterious threat, Pitt is sent to the edge of the solar system to search for his father (Tommy Lee Jones), who went missing on a mission 16 years prior while experimenting on a material that could destroy all life.

From the trailer, it seems like "Ad Astra" is a psychological drama, as Pitt's astronaut wrestles with the memories and legacy of his father, the difficult mission he is tasked with, and his own state of mind.

Liv Tyler, Ruth Negga and Donald Sutherland also star.

"Ad Astra" opens in theaters September 20.
