As the public face of a film, the job of an actor is to bring to life a character and serve as an ambassador of a production.

What an actor does: Usually working from a script, the actor studies and researches a character to create an emotional backstory, as well as participate in rehearsals ahead of performing in front of the camera. They must have very strong memorization skills, be wiling to work irregular hours for erratic time periods and travel extensively.

Who the actor relies on: Actors work cooperatively with cast-mates and perform according to the director’s instructions.

How much an actor is paid: While Robert Downey Jr. raked in $80 million in one year, nearly all actors can barely make a living -- if at all. Lead actors and actresses in low-budget films are to paid a minimum of about $500 a day under union rules; medium- to big-budget films call for about $860 a day minimum for leads.

Networking: Actors are represented by the Screen Actors Guild, which has merged with American Federation of Television and Radio Artists to create SAG-AFTRA. The Guild’s purpose is to work for its 160,000 members by negotiating wages, working conditions, and health and pension benefits. The Guild works to enforce contracts with movie studios and producers, also gives actors access to casting directors. To join the organization, actors must pay a fee and showing proof that they are working in a position that would be covered by the Guild. http://www.sagaftra.org/home
