A 'Sideways' Broadway Musical Is in the Works
You can count on this: Nobody will be drinking merlot in the planned stage musical version of "Sideways."
Alexander Payne's acclaimed 2004 dramedy is getting turned into a Broadway musical. Rex Pickett, who wrote the novel on which the Oscar-winning screenplay by Payne and Jim Taylor was based, is working with EFG-Renascence Productions to develop a musical based on the film.
For "Sideways, The Musical," composer Anthony Adams will record six original songs for the project's Broadway pitch.
The movie stars Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church as friends who embark on a week-long road trip through Santa Barbara wine country. They meet and romance two women, played by Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh, along the way.
Giamatti's character, Miles Raymond, is a wine snob who vehemently does want to drink "any f---ing merlot":
