Ask any thirtysomething woman if she watched Jem and the Holograms as a girl and the answer will undoubtedly be a resounding yes. The popular 1980s cartoon revolved around Jerrica Benton, the owner and manager of Starlight Music, who becomes a bona fide pop star with her sister and best friends thanks to the help of a hologram-generating computer called Synergy.

In the live-action remake, Jem comes to life on the big screen as a small-town girl who catapults from YouTube-type singing sensation to mainstream success when the biggest record label in the world decides to sign her and her bandmates.
