2017 Oscars: Best and Worst Dressed
Everyone's talking about the on-air mistakes at the 2017 Oscars, but what about the fashions? The 89th Academy Awards had its own share of hits and misses, so here are our picks for the best and worst dressed of the Feb. 26 show.
BEST: Janelle Monae
We do not do boring, and neither did the "Hidden Figures" and "Moonlight" star, who went BIG in this Elie Saab Couture gown. When you're in two Best Picture nominees, and the eventual winner, you can go ahead and dress like the best kind of drama queen.
BEST: Nicole Kidman
You know, on any other body type, this Armani Privé gown would probably be a miss, but on ageless real-life mannequin Nicole Kidman, it looks flawless. As always. Of course. It's almost boring to add the "Lion" nominee to a Best Dressed list, but just look at her.
BEST: Kirsten Dunst
This one has pockets! Really, Dunst hit it out of the park with this clean, polished, deceptively simple Christian Dior Haute Couture design. It hugs her hourglass silhouette in all the best ways, and she accessorized it perfectly with a statement necklace and earrings by Niwaka. As much as bold can be beautiful, simple can be just as stunning.
BEST: Emma Stone
Emma Stone was the "It Girl" of the 2017 Oscars, so you know she put a lot of thought into what she wore. This golden Givenchy Couture gown came with its own flapper fringe, perfect for the "La La Land" winner's ode to Old Hollywood. Jazz glam at its finest.
BEST: Taraji P. Henson
Daaaaaamn, Cookie. The "Hidden Figures" star did not hide her figure one bit in this Alberta Ferretti gown with Nirav Modi jewels. If Elizabeth Taylor were still with us, she'd approve ... or fight Taraji to the death for this look.
BEST: Naomie Harris
This one was on the line for a while, but the more you look at it, the better it gets. The "Moonlight" nominee's white strapless Calvin Klein By Appointment dress was sequined (it's hard to see that from afar) and included a cape (almost always a plus) and she accessorized it with yellow sandals and Bulgari diamond drop earrings. All told, we're into the overall result.
BEST: Felicity Jones
Don't even fight us on this one. Felicity Jones looks like a ballerina princess in this Dior gown, and she can do no wrong.
WORST: Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson is one of the most beautiful women in the entire world, but in this Azzedine Alaia gown, the "Avengers" star looks like she's wearing a shower curtain. And the belt does not help.
WORST: Dakota Johnson
By now, "Fifty Shades" star Dakota Johnson has thick enough skin that she can handle any kind of criticism. That's a good thing since it's hard to find anything positive to say about how she looks in this Gucci gown. It's very "Golden Girls," which could be considered a compliment, if that's where she was going with it.
MIXED: Jessica Biel
Jessica Biel has a mannequin body like Nicole Kidman, but it turns out you CAN sometimes have too much gold. The intentional rips in the very shiny KaufmanFranco dress become distracting the more you look at them, and that Tiffany & Co. necklace on top of the gown just feels like too much. The same necklace with a more subtle gown would probably be great, but together it's just a lot. Still, with that body, she can wear anything and look good.
NOT SURE YET: Priyanka Chopra
This is a two-parter. Because the front of this Ralph & Russo design is intriguing, in a good way, but then there's the side view...
NOT SURE YET: Priyanka Chopra
You see? Not into that mesh stuff. And did it leave her trying to cover up side boob action? That would also be a minus.
