17 Things We Learned on the Set of 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2'
Last year, Moviefone and a group of other reporters headed to Atlanta to visit the set of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" in an attempt to get as much information as we possibly could about the upcoming Marvel sequel.
If you know anything about Marvel, then you know they were pretty tight-lipped about a lot of things. What they did give us, however, has us so excited for the movie that we can barely contain ourselves. Is it May 5th yet?
Here are 17 things we learned on the set of Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2."
1. Since the last movie, the Guardians have been attempting to be heroes.
"They are available for do-gooding, so to speak. It doesn't always go well, but they try," Marvel president Kevin Feige told us. "And when we first meet them at the beginning of the movie, they're in a place called Sovereign, where they've been asked to deal with this giant beast that eats their power source and wreaks havoc on the planet."
2. There's more action, which means more stunts.
"The stunts here are much more defined and they've been a lot more challenging, so I've been having fun," Zoe Saldana, who plays Gamora, said. "Especially after popping twins like 17 months ago. The fact that I can get on wires and be lifted 30 feet up in the air at full speed, or just be dropped and land on heels, I love that they're trusting me with this."
3. The Ravagers aren't going anywhere.
"The Ravagers have a bigger part in this movie," Feige revealed.
4. Yondu's soft spot for Quill gets him in trouble.
"There is an incident in the first act of this movie where [the Ravagers] have been hired to get Quill, but, yet again, Yondu is like: 'We're not gonna take down the Guardians of the Galaxy, we'd be crazy to do that." But Taserface and some others are like 'Bullsh*t, you're just doing that because you're soft on Quill,' and it leads to a mutiny," Feige said.
5. Yondu gets a bigger fin!
"Yondu's fin has a big thing to do with the Ravager's more present role in this movie," writer and director James Gunn told us.6. We learn why Quill could hold the Infinity Stone.
"There's a question as to why Star-Lord was able to hold the Infinity Stone and not be completely and immediately destroyed, and we learn a little bit more about why that's the case in this movie," Gunn revealed.
7. Be on the lookout for even more Easter eggs.
Gunn love his Easter eggs. "Our Easter egg obsession is insane," he said. "In fact, we have so many obscure Easter eggs in this movie that it's ridiculous."
8. It doesn't exactly tie in with everything else going on in the MCU.
"The way this film ends will inform future things, but there's nothing that nods directly towards it," Feige revealed.
9. Nebula is still having a rough life.
"We realize that the payment for the mission the Guardians have done on Sovereign is to get Nebula," Feige said. "The Sovereign has captured her and are exchanging her for their services."10. Nebula and Gamora get closer, but not that close.
"[Nebula's] on a mission to find Gamora and rectify a few things there," Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula, said. "And we're going to find out a lot about their backstory and learn a lot about Thanos's parenting skills, and maybe how dysfunctional the entire thing is. So we're gonna chip away at those layers, which is really fun."
"Through their relationship, you get a closer idea of what Thanos is really about," Saldana added.
11. Nebula hangs out with all the Guardians.
"Her main focus is Gamora, but she finds herself with all of them and I think she's unimpressed by Rocket," Gillan said. "She doesn't know what he is as an animal. She doesn't understand him."
12. Quill and Gamora explore their relationship.
"They're becoming a really good team in the way that oil and vinegar are, where it's good together, but they tend to stick to their own things," Saldana told us. "I think Peter may have gotten a little more annoying, and Gamora is a little too rigid sometimes. So, through the dynamics that are happening around her, she learns to relax."13. Mantis brings a whole new dynamic to the group.
"She's an alien, and she's spent her life with Kurt Russell's character, Ego. She was pretty lonely and then she meets the Guardians. She has empathic powers, so it's connected with her feelings and emotions. She can change other people's emotions," Pom Klementieff, who portrays Mantis, explained.
14. Drax and Mantis form an unlikely friendship.
"I think they're both really awkward, but at the very core of Drax, he's really just heartbroken. There's an innocence about Drax, and I think Mantis has that as well, and I think that's probably where their connection would be the most -- just a very child-like innocence with both characters," Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, revealed.15. Drax still doesn't like Groot.
"I don't think Drax and the tree are ever going to get along," Bautista joked.
16. The cast got to do a little more improvising.
"There's a lot more freedom that James [Gunn] is giving us, and letting us improvise and kind of test how well we know we our characters," Saldana revealed.
17. You won't find any sexualizing of Mantis.
"I didn't want the character to be sexual, and, usually, they're always like that. And I think that we're creating something different," Klementieff asserted.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" hits theaters May 5th.
