10 Most Terrifying 'American Horror Story' Characters, Ranked By Scariness
From "Murder House" to "Freak Show," here are some of the most terrifying beings to ever come out of "American Horror Story," ranked by their ability to scare the heck out of us.
10. Sister Mary Eunice (Lily Rabe), Season 2
Sister Mary Eunice didn't get truly get uber scary until she was -- wait for it -- possessed by a demon. From then on she transformed into a manipulative evildoer who called herself the devil. That's one messed up nun.
9. The Axeman (Danny Huston), Season 3
Anyone who is referred to as "The Axeman" is probably not a person you want to associate with. (Unless you're Fiona Goode.) Pardon us for fearing a blood-thirsty tool-weilding mass murderer with a penchant for jazz saxophone.
8. Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates), Season 3
Kathy Bates's Delphine, based on the real-life New Orleans socialite of the same name, gave us the serious chills. What's worse than a sadistic bigot serial murderer who tortures slaves and smears their blood on her face?
7. Tate Langdon (Evan Peters), Season 1
We'll admit that this one is a bit complicated considering Tate showed signs of the ability to care in the way he treated Violet. But no matter how cute you might think this guy's smile is, he's done some very unforgivable things... like committing a mass murder at a high school.
6. Charles Montgomery (Matt Ross), Season 1
I'm sorry, we're just not OK with sewing animal on a dismembered baby. This once surgeon-to-stars with a "Frankenstein complex" is one of the creepiest people to grace the "AHS" universe. His mutilation of Elizabeth Short's body and his giving her a Chelsea Smile because "she seemed so sad" is the stuff nightmares are made of.
5. Thaddeus Montgomery/Infantata (Ben Woolf), Season 1
Soooooo, "Infatata" is the pieced-together remains of a dismembered baby body with the heart of an aborted fetus and a thirst for blood. The fact that he wears a frilly lace funeral nightie makes him that much more terrifying. That face really says it all, huh?
4. Arthur Arden (James Cromwell), Season 2
Yikes. Nazi torture machine Dr. Arthur Arden ran concentration camps, performed sadistic experiments on patients, and didn't even bother to use anesthetics because he's that sick. Disfiguring kidnapped inmates and making them survive in the forest on raw meat is just one of his disturbing pastimes.
3. Dandy Mott (Finn Witrock), Season 4
Dandy Mott is the psychotic little rich boy you never want to cross paths with. The developmentally-stunted, tantrum-having spoiled brat scares the crap out of us because he rocks a super creepy Kewpie Doll hairdo and exhibits dangerous levels of deluded self-confidence. Oh, he's also a deranged serial killer with a fondness for torturing cats...
Dr. Oliver 'Bloody Face' Thredson (Zachary Quinto), Season 2
Don't let the hipster '60s glasses and the MD title fool you. This man makes Hannibal Lector seem like a cuddly teddy bear. He beheads people, makes them into furniture, and wears their flesh as a mask! His laundry list of petrifying offenses would have anyone crawling out of their skin. (Whoops, bad choice of words.)
Twisty the Clown (John Carroll Lynch), Season 4
Yes. Yes. We know he has a heartbreaking backstory and that he is tragically misunderstood, but that does not excuse the fact that he is a brutal murderer. Scary savage clowns who pop out of nowhere trump everything else, and that is why Twisty lands at number one. Sorry, Twisty.
