In 1889 a Chinese man using decayed ancient tortoise shells in his malaria medicine noticed that the shells were covered with scrolls of mysterious inscriptions The oracle bones as the shells were called told the story of an ancient people known as the Shang a civilisation which had long been dismissed as legend Since then historians have found more evidence of this ancient city but the city itself has never been found
