Mr Jabar and his wife are the products of Malay society around 19551960 They raise their children Hassan and Salleh to express their love of country based on their national and ethnic history Hassan becomes active in politics but his political failure and his fathers death make him schizophrenic Their mother tries to rear the boys well but Salleh turns into a wild young man He meets Salmah a cabaret dancer whom he eventually marries Relationships within the family worsen
