Revival: Pearse's Concept of Ireland
NR 1 hr 14 minDocumentary, Drama
Patrick Pearse, a leader of the 1916 Rebellion against British rule in Ireland, has been revered as a martyr by some and castigated as a fanatic by others. Before taking up a political career, he spent over a decade evolving and expressing a detailed concept of Ireland -- most of which has lain forgotten ever since. His concept of Irish Freedom, which he expressed in great detail, has largely remained unexamined since his execution. This film returns to the source of his own writings to explore the ideas for which he ultimately gave his life. Much of it was shot in the actual locations where Pearse lived and worked - St. Enda's school in Rathfarnham, Dublin and his cottage in Rosmuc, Connemara and it looks at Pearse's commitments which are still the perennial issues of Irish life -- the language, the Church's role, Northern Ireland, education. It is presented in the format of a modern TV current affairs interview.
