Opa! The sprawling, squabbling Greek American Portokalos family is back –– and this time they’re headed to the homeland.
Yes, Nia Vardalos’ Toula, non-Greek hubby Ian (John Corbett) and the rest of her clan return for a third outing, which this time (at least going by this trailer) doesn’t actually seem to feature a wedding.
What’s the ‘Greek Wedding’ story so far?
To spin back the clock, 2002 saw the original ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’, drawn from Vardalos’ own life as a Greek Canadian first-generation young woman growing up with a pushy, chatty Greek family.
She turned her experiences into a one-woman stage show, which Rita Wilson saw and offered to help develop into a movie (it doesn’t hurt that in addition to her own clout, she’s married to Tom Hanks, whose Playtone company came aboard).
The result became the highest-grossing independent film of all time, a crown it held for a couple of years until ‘The Passion of the Christ’ took over the title. But one record still stands –– it’s the highest-grossing movie never to have hit #1 at the box office.
It was a pop cultural sensation, telling a story both specific and universal and following Toula as she navigates life with her loud, pushy family, splitting her time between college classes and working at their restaurant, Dancing Zorba’s in Chicago.
When she meets Ian Miller (Corbett), her father Gus (Michael Constantine) is distraught, as he’d hoped she’d marry a nice Greek boy. Yet Ian and Toula win over her family, and she learns to take control of her own life.
It was followed by 2016’s ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’, which finds Ian and Toula still happily married (if in a bit of a rut) and parents to teenage daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris). The plot this time hinges on Gus and wife Maria (Lainie Kazan) are technically not legally married and the dramatic fallout from that. Spoiler alert –– it all ends happily with a new wedding for the pair.
What happens in ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’?
Taking place only a couple of years after the second movie, the new one, as we said previously, doesn’t initially seem to revolve around a wedding. Instead, in the wake of Gus’ death (Constantine himself died in 2021), Toula and the family decide to stage a family reunion in Greece, resulting in what promises to be a hilarious, chaotic trip across the ocean.

Who else is in the movie?
Besides the leads, the new movie sees the return of Andrea Martin as Thiea Voula, Joey Fatone as Angelo, Gia Carides as Nikki, Stavroula Logothettis as Athena, Gerry Mendicino as Thieo Taki and Peter Tharos as Yianni.
New this time are the likes of Louis Mandylor, Stephanie Nur and Elias Kacavas.
Vardalos, who has written and starred in the previous two movies, here adds director to her resume, and fans of the other films are promised more of the warm, funny family madness.
‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’ will be in theaters on September 8th.
