With the likes of ‘Mario’ and ‘Sonic’ confirming that ‘Pokémon: Detective Pikachu’ was not a fluke, studios have somewhat naturally begun to realize that after years of being considered troublesome –– thanks, original ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ –– there are actually real possibilities for success in the world of turning video games into movies.

Which means, of course, that the game adaptation genre can start to expand out further, and team Blumhouse have seemingly jumped on the idea of horror game ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s.'

With Emma Tammi in the director’s chair working from a script credited to her, Scott Cawthon (who created the games) and Seth Cuddeback, ‘Freddy’s promises to be a bloody, terrifying night set in a place that looks like the worst Chuck E. Cheese you can imagine. So… any Chuck E. Cheese?

What’s the story of ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’?

The movie stars Josh Hutcherson (‘The Hunger Games’) as Mike Schmidt, down on his luck, who is desperate to make money so he can support him and his daughter Abby (Piper Rubio).

So in need of a job is he that his alarm bells don’t automatically ring when he accepts a night-time job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a once-successful (but now generally abandoned) family entertainment center, which is creepy enough in all its squalor. And bringing Abby with him feels like a mistake, even if he can’t find care elsewhere for her.

Still, he settles in for a night of what he expects to be boredom, only to be visited by police officer Vanessa (Elizbeth Lail), who warns him that all is not as it seems at Freddy’s. “Have you met them yet?” she asks, cryptically.

She’s referring to the center’s four animatronic mascots –– Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy –– who, wouldn’t you know it, come to life after midnight. AND KILL PEOPLE. Sorry, but that’s not really a spoiler alert.

A history of the horror

Despite appearing like it’s taking advantage of the current trend for game-to-movie adaptations, this one has in fact been in development for nearly decade after Warner Bros. picked up the rights in 2015 and had Seth Grahame-Smith and Cawthon among the team producing it.

But it didn’t make much movement there –– Cawthon reported in 2017 that the movie version had faced various delays and was essentially back to square one.

Shortly after, however, it was picked up by Blumhouse, which has now gotten it to the finish line. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop was involved in the animatronics for Freddy and his weird friends, and it’ll be ready to scare us just before Halloween.

To that end, ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ will be in theaters and streaming on Peacock from October 27th.
