For some people, having Nicolas Cage –– or at least, the character he plays here –– show up during their slumber might be considered a good dream.
Others? Might think it’s more a nightmare. And from the looks of new comedy drama ‘Dream Scenario’, it turns out it could be a little of both.
This is the latest Cage movie to arrive via high-profile indie label A24 and has already enjoyed positive attention at the Toronto International Film Festival. So, we’d expect it to fare better than many of his straight-to-home-entertainment action pics.
What’s the story of ‘Dream Scenario’?
Hapless family man and college professor Paul Matthews (Cage) finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams.
But when his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom.

Who else is in ‘Dream Scenario’?
The cast for this latest Cage match also includes Julianne Nicholson, Michael Cera, Lily Bird, Jessica Clement, Star Slade, David Klein, Tim Meadows, Dylan Gelula and Dylan Baker.
Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli, who last made 2022’s ‘Sick of Myself’, writes and directs here, but perhaps an even more key name behind the scenes is ‘Beau is Afraid’ and ‘Midsommar’s Ari Aster, and this certainly feels like the sort of trippy film he might make.
Cage talks about ‘Dream Scenario’
With A24 signing on to SAG-AFTRA’s interim agreement, Cage was able to attend the premiere and talked about the movie, likening the concept of a man going viral to his own life and career, and particularly a clip reel video that hit YouTube in 2010 called ‘Nicolas Cage Losing his s**t’.
Here’s Cage making the comparison:
“I might have been the first actor who woke up one morning and somebody had put a montage of me freaking out in different movies online, and it went viral around the world. I kept looking at it like, What is happening to me? That’s not how I meant it. It kept growing exponentially, and nothing I could do could stop it. I thought, Now I can turn this lead into a little bit of gold.”
As for Borgli, while the film edges towards more comedy than his last movie, he also aimed to deliver on the nightmare front as well as the dreams.
Here’s what he told Vanity Fair:
“I wanted them to feel actually traumatic and horrific. Both in the lived life and in the dream life, it was always about taking things seriously.”
‘Dream Scenario’ will be in theaters on limited release November 10th, before expanding wide on November 22nd. Happy Cagegiving, everyone!
