Getting the chance to work on the giant ‘Harry Potter’ movies was surely a dream come true for anybody. For teenage gymnast David Holmes, scoring the gig of lead stunt double for Harry himself, Daniel Radcliffe, was just that.
Yet while he enjoyed a decade of close collaboration with Radcliffe, the stunt team and the various filmmakers who crafted the ‘Potter’ movies, Holmes’ story had a tragic blip when he was badly injured on the set of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One’.
Still, Holmes didn’t let that stop him in his mission to help others, and now his story is being told in new documentary ‘David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived’. Executive produced by Radcliffe (who is among the key interviewees), the film is from director Dan Hartley.
What’s the story of ‘David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived’?
The documentary is a coming-of-age story of stuntman David Holmes, a prodigious teenage gymnast from Essex, England, who is selected to play Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double in the first ‘Harry Potter’ film, when Daniel is just eleven.
Over the next ten years, the two form an inextricable bond, but on the penultimate film a tragic accident on set leaves David paralyzed with a debilitating spinal injury, turning his world upside down. As Daniel and his closest stunt colleagues rally to support David and his family in their moment of need, it is David’s extraordinary spirit of resilience that becomes their greatest source of strength and inspiration.
Featuring candid personal footage shot over the last decade, behind-the-scenes material from Holmes’ stunt work, scenes of his current life and intimate interviews with David, Daniel Radcliffe, friends, family, and former crew, the film also reflects universal themes of living with adversity, growing up, forging identities in an uncertain world, and the bonds that bind us together and lift us up.
The movie promises to be an uplifting and inspiring one and surely of interest to anyone who loved the ‘Potter’ films. Plus, it offers the chance for more behind-the-scenes footage from the franchise in a fascinating true story.
