Born in San Marino, California, he pursued studies in classical guitar under Andrés Segovia and earned degrees in comparative literature from the University of California, Irvine. Thompson's filmography includes notable works such as Two Portraits (1982), Universal Hotel (1986), and Universal Citizen (1987).
