The Next 'Star Wars' Movie Will Come From 'Game of Thrones' Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss
"Game of Thrones" is ending, but showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are ready to start their journey in a galaxy far, far away.
The next "Star Wars" movie — after "Rise of Skywalker," slated for release in December 2022 — will come from the pair, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed today at the MoffetNathanson Media & Communications summit.
“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B Weiss, who are famous for 'Game of Thrones,' and the next movie that we release will be theirs,” Iger said. “And we’re not saying anything more about that.”
Disney recently announced three new "Star Wars" movies, to follow the concluding chapter of the Skywalker saga, to open on the pre-Christmas weekend every other year beginning in 2022.
Benioff and Weiss were brought into the "Star Wars" fold in February 2018 to write and direct a series of films. They joined Rian Johnson, director of "The Last Jedi," as the architects of the next phase of Lucasfilm projects.
Benioff and Weiss wrote and directed this Sunday's series finale of "Game of Thrones." They created the series in partnership with author George R.R. Martin.
The final season has proven divisive among fans, but it's still a pop cultural phenomenon. This past Sunday's episode, the penultimate, notched a series high in ratings.
