Live-Action 'Hunchback of Notre Dame' Remake in the Works at Disney
"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" will be the next of Disney's animated classics to get a live-action remake.
Disney has hired Tony-winning playwright David Henry Hwang to pen an adaptation that draws from the 1831 Victor Hugo novel and the 1996 Disney animated movie.
Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, the team who earned an Oscar nomination for their work on the 1996 movie, will return to oversee the music in the remake. The new version, however, will not draw from their "Hunchback" stage production.
Josh Gad, who appeared in Disney's hit live-action remake of "Beauty and the Beast," is attached as a producer.
The story centers on Quasimodo, the titular hunchback who lives a reclusive life in the bell towers of the Notre Dame cathedral. The kind Quasimodo is shunned by society until he's befriended by the gypsy Esmeralda.
Hugo's tale has been a popular one for adaptation. Idris Elba is developing a modern retelling for Netflix.
Disney is churning out live-action remakes of its popular animated classics, with new versions of "Aladdin," "The Lion King," "Dumbo," and "Mulan" all on deck.
