The upcoming reboot of "Jumanji" is getting a new release date, with studio Sony pushing back the debut from next summer to next winter.

"Jumanji," the Dwayne Johnson flick that's being billed as sort of a reboot-sequel-reimagining hybrid of the hit 1995 film (itself based on a 1981 children's book by Chris Van Allsburg), was originally slated to hit theaters on July 28, 2017. Now, it will premiere on December 22, 2017. It's now going head to head with hotly-anticipated threequel "Pitch Perfect 3," animated flick "Ferdinand," and '60s reboot "The Six Billion Dollar Man."

No official reason was given for the switch, though it's probably due to the shifting release date of fellow Sony property "The Dark Tower," which has moved from its original February 2017 date to "Jumanji"'s old July release date. That flick needs some more time in post-production, and the studio didn't want to rush it into theaters (or risk a ballooning budget by working overtime to get the special effects ready for an early 2017 date).

And Sony isn't done adjusting its calendar yet. Also moving release dates are the Denzel Washington action sequel "The Equalizer 2" (from September 29, 2017 to September 14, 2018), the reboot of 1990s flick "Flatliners" (from August 18, 2017 to September 29, 2017), and long-awaited sequel "T2 Trainspotting" (from February 3, 2017 to limited release on March 3, 2017, and wide release on on March 10, 2017), which just released its first trailer on Thursday.

Stay tuned. With so many movies planned out so far in advance, it's likely this calendar could shift once again.
