Blame Christopher Nolan, who kicked off the trend -- and helped coin the term -- with his 2005 success, "Batman Begins." Gone were the nipple-suited adventures of The Dark Knight, in favor of a very grounded, very gritty, take -- driven by character-first stakes over whatever the hell was going on with "Batman & Robin."
